The Hancock Choral Scholars is a scholarship program for high school juniors and seniors. Eligible singers receive a $2500 per year scholarship upon their matriculation at the school of their choice. In return, the Scholar sings each week with our Chancel Choir at rehearsal and during our Sunday morning services. They gain valuable musical and choral experience while adding their voice to our choir. The program is open to all high school juniors and seniors regardless of faith, denomination, sexual orientation, etc. Auditions happen by appointment, and at any point during the year if an opening is available. For more information, please contact Mark Morgan, Director of Music at music.director@hancockchurch.org.
Testimonial
“For me, the Hancock Choral Scholar program was both musically and socially a remarkable, enriching experience. I was welcomed into a choir with members ages 30 through 80 and varying degrees of musical experience to match; some had played or sung professionally for decades and others only recently learned to read music, but as members of the ensemble every one of us was committed to producing the best we could for the congregation each week. Organizing our energies, Mark provided eclectic repertoire and approached the task of preparing it with attention to technical nuance as well as emotional impact. I learned skills: to match timbre, to sight-read quickly, to phrase with meaning. I learned to consider historical and cultural contexts of pieces, to track the role of my part, to never forget the meaning of what I sang. And I learned the absolute compassion and support of a faith community, and the value of friends from all stages of life. The growth I experienced at Hancock as a young person and musician was extraordinary, and with my two years at a close all I can do is thank the HCS program and the choir for being such a wonderful part of my life.”
