Special Services

Inspired by the life of Jesus Christ we believe we are all on a spiritual path leading us to growth in Christian values and faithfulness to God. Hancock Church has a variety of programs that support individuals and families on this journey in all phases of their lives.

Baptism

Along with communion, baptism is one of two sacraments celebrated at Hancock. Sacraments are regarded as gifts to us from God in order to reveal God’s love for us. Baptism is a “visible sign of an invisible reality,” namely the gracious love of God that makes everyone welcome in the beloved community. Baptism is also understood as a sign that God’s forgiving love is of primary importance: it is more powerful than any human failing.

Put simply, baptism accomplishes two things:

  • It reveals that God’s forgiving love is available to all;
  • It marks the beginning of a person’s Christian journey.

Who is it for? It is for you, and for your children, if you desire it.

Communion

Communion (The Lord’s Supper) is the central meal of fellowship and remembrance for the Church. Everyone is invited and welcome to partake in communion at Hancock Church.

Communion is generally served on the first Sunday of each month in the morning worship service and at every evening worship service.  We serve communion two ways, by passing the communion to the congregation in the pews and by intinction.

Served Communion in the pews:  At the morning service, communion is typically served by the Deacons.  The bread and the cup are passed individually to the congregation in the pews.  To celebrate our sense of community in faith, we hold the bread and eat together when all are served.  To celebrate our individual faith journeys, we drink the cup individually.

Communion by intinction:  At the evening service, and some morning services, communion is served by intinction.  Ministers and Deacons will be at the front of the church with the bread and the cup and the congregation will come forward to receive communion, dipping the bread into the cup.  Those needing assistance will be served in the pews.
